Root-cause medicine to help high-performing women rebalance hormones, restore energy, and feel like themselves again.

Functional Medicine for Athletes

More than performance enhancement—

You just have to find the root cause of your symptoms so you can fix them - for good.

You don’t have to keep telling yourself that feeling this way is normal, nor should you continue to waste money on endless supplements that have no effect on your health and performance.

Together, we’ll balance your hormones, improve energy production, and restore gut health.

book here

You are a motivated, high-achieving athlete who trains hard, eats well, takes your supplements, yet you rarely feel 100%.

let me guess...

Look Familiar?

It takes longer than it should to recover from hard training sessions and competitions, or you’re bonking frequently, despite following your dietician’s advice.

You struggle to fall or stay asleep no matter how much melatonin or magnesium you take.

You feel on edge, easily emotional, like you no longer have resilience to stress.

You suspect you have gut issues that result in frequent bloating, gas, burping, indigestion, heartburn, constipation, or diarrhea.

You feel there is more you could be doing to optimize your training.

You just DON’T FEEL LIKE YOURSELF.

But your doctor runs tests and they all come back “normal” so you’re told, “you're fine.”

How do I know?

I created this program for athletes because I have experienced the consequences of over-stressing my mind and body. Simultaneously, I began to see similar patterns in the symptoms and labs of my athlete patients. They were depleted and it was affecting not only their performance but their QUALITY OF LIFE.

We know intense exercise affects every system in the body, but when we continuously push our limits, we need different and better tools to remain healthy, resilient, and performing at our best.

Intense training can create chronic energy and nutrient depletions that lead to impairments in gut health, which creates systemic inflammation that ultimately affects performance, sleep, mood, and energy levels.

These symptoms aren’t unique to athletes, however, the underlying causes of these symptoms ARE unique, and this is where conventional medicine falls short.

This program goes beyond the conventional by utilizing advanced diagnostic tools to determine the unique factors that are contributing to your symptoms. Once we have the appropriate data, we implement the best tools available to resolve your underlying causes SUCCESSFULLY.

BECAUSE THIS IS EXACTLY HOW MY ATHLETE PATIENTS USED TO FEEL.

(And so did I.)

From Dismissed to Thriving:
Real Patient Journeys

Program: 6-Month Performance Optimization

Key Results: Restored energy, improved recovery, regular menstrual cycle, returned to 22-mile training days

Before:

Chris came to Rise as an endurance athlete struggling with severe fatigue, hypothermia symptoms during training, and muscle loss after a giardia infection. She was going through the motions of something she used to love, feeling moody and grumpy on the trail.

After:

"This trip, I felt the magic again and I felt like me. I loved almost every second and I felt strong up until the end. The second day was almost 22 miles—my first long one since giardia. I was surprised I didn't feel tired at the end, and that's probably because I fueled more consistently."

"The really amazing thing was my feet. When I woke up the next morning, I was amazed at how hard the bottoms of my feet were. I guess my body had the energy to rejuvenate overnight in a way that it never had before."

"My period came on Monday at 4 weeks. Back on schedule! Thanks for helping me get back to what I love!!"

Chris

The Endurance Athlete

The Journey:

Through advanced testing, we discovered significant nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalances affecting her recovery and performance. We implemented a personalized protocol focusing on cellular-level optimization and proper fueling strategies.

These aren't quick fixes or one-time consultations. These are comprehensive programs that address root causes and deliver lasting results.

Gut-Brain Axis

Systemic immune activity is generated by gut inflammation during intense training. Over time, we may also see changes in neurotransmitters, which impact mood, energy, and stress.

Injury Risk

Intense training (without the right program) can cause changes to our stress response and cortisol levels, decrease testosterone, and decrease bone density, which can increase risk of stress fracture or injury.

Intense training can exacerbate normal hormonal changes that occur in mid-life (30s-50s). This can compound nutrient deficiencies, gastrointestinal symptoms, energy, and mood changes.

No more guessing or Googling symptoms. No more gaslighting from your healthcare provider.

You can feel energized, clear, and focused, ready to take on your training while reducing your risk of injury and inflammation.

What if I told you there is a better way?

We can support you during all stages of training, competition, and post-competition recovery.

Built just for athletes of all types.

ARE YOU READY?

Introducing Functional Medicine for Athletes

We approach testing based on YOUR symptoms and risk factors.

This is NOT a cookie cutter program.

Personalized precision care is what defines functional medicine. This level of precision is necessary when diagnosing and treating the complex, multi-system symptoms that can result from prolonged, strenuous training and competition.

But when you identify the real causes and treat them with the right tools, not only are performance and recovery enhanced, but so are mood, energy, and quality of life.

Functional Medicine Testing for Athletes

Get answers with advanced labwork

Micronutrients +
Athletes are at increased risk for nutrient deficiencies for several reasons. We can measure most nutrient levels through bloodwork and urine testing.
Microbiome and gut health +
Many athletes experience gastrointestinal distress—whether it's during training, after meals, or seemingly out of nowhere. While poor nutrition can play a role, there’s often more going on beneath the surface.

Functional stool testing helps identify imbalances in gut flora, inflammation, parasitic or fungal infections, and contributors to hormone disruption.

Breath testing can identify SIBO, a common but overlooked source of bloating, fatigue, and GI symptoms in active individuals.
Organic acids testing +
Intense exercise can increase risk of nutrient depletion, neurotransmitter imbalances, and oxidative stress—especially with high training volume or limited recovery.

This test provides a comprehensive metabolic snapshot, assessing mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter balance, toxin exposure, gut dysbiosis, and micronutrient status.

It’s a powerful tool for understanding cellular function and what your body needs to perform, recover, and feel its best.
Hormones and adrenals +
Intense training can disrupt communication between the brain and adrenal glands—impacting stress response, thyroid function, and sex hormones.

This testing uncovers root causes of fatigue, poor recovery, mood changes, weight fluctuations, and performance decline.

Thyroid panel includes TSH, T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, thyroid antibodies, and key nutrient markers.

Programs also include salivary cortisol testing for a full view of adrenal health.
Cardiometabolic health +
We offer advanced cardiovascular and metabolic testing through the Quest Cardiometabolic Center of Excellence™ at Cleveland HeartLab®.

This testing provides deeper insights into inflammation, cholesterol particle size, insulin resistance, and early risk markers—long before traditional labs detect issues.
Genetic testing +
We offer and interpret advanced genetic testing through platforms like 3X4 Genetics and My Happy Genes.

These insights can reveal predispositions such as nutrient deficiencies, detoxification challenges, neurotransmitter imbalances, and support personalized training, recovery, and nutrition strategies.

To offer the very best in care without the shortcuts often required by insurance companies, Rise is out-of-network, direct pay only. Please take the time to understand your insurance benefits and deductibles.

We can provide a superbill for the medical services included in your program, which you can submit to your insurance provider for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

However, since our programs are structured as comprehensive, prepaid packages, it’s important to understand how superbills work in this context:

What’s included on a superbill?

A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes:

  • Dates of your provider visits
  • CPT (procedure) and ICD-10 (diagnosis) codes
  • The provider’s credentials and NPI number
  • Fees for eligible medical services

We itemize each billable medical visit (like your initial consult, lab review, or follow-ups), even though you’ve paid for the program as a bundle. These visits are assigned a fair-market rate and submitted individually.

What’s not included on a superbill?

Insurance will not reimburse for:

  • Supplements
  • Lab kits or blood draw fees
  • CGMs, wearable devices, or scales
  • Peptides or hormone therapy medications
  • Health coaching, educational materials, or messaging access

These items are bundled into your program cost for convenience but are not reimbursable through insurance.

Yes. As a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner, I can prescribe medications, including bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and peptides, when clinically appropriate.

I have advanced training in hormone optimization through the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) and have completed specialized education with Dr. Neil Rouzier, a leading expert in evidence-based hormone therapy.

With years of experience prescribing HRT and peptides for both perimenopausal women and endurance athletes, I ensure that every prescription is personalized based on your labs, symptoms, goals, and overall physiology.

who am I, anyway?

Hi! I’m DR. Ashley Shrader, DNP, IFMCP

I’m also a certified functional medicine practitioner with a passion for gut and hormone health. I believe we all have an innate, natural power to heal- partly because I’ve been in your shoes.

With a history of autoimmune disease, I spent years suffering from odd symptoms like fatigue and brain fog, despite training hard and doing all of the “right things.” It wasn’t until I found the root cause that I was able to finally heal.
